I was minutes away from calling Snow to ask him to help. I was so worried about Riordan. Then he texted me. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to make breathing easier.

The last few days had been filled with so many thoughts. Was Riordan the man that Bill said he was? Maybe he didn’t have pictures around his place because the memories hurt. There were so many scenarios in which a person would tell someone to be safe. I was overthinking. Poe was probably closer to the truth. Riordan cared, so he told me to be careful.

I was done worrying. I spent my time working with other clients, finishing up a few video games, and getting my notes and reviews out. It was a good thing I had multiple consoles.

On Thursday, I decided it was time to get Riordan to talk, so I drove over to his place. I was tired and sweaty by the time I arrived. I really had to consider getting a new car. Air conditioning was a must.

At his gate, I pressed the code in and… nothing. I tried again and still nothing. He changed the code?

“Mr. Harris?” A tall and very broad man approached my car.

“Who’s asking?”

“I was asked to give you these should you show up.”

It was then I looked down at the giant’s feet. It began to feel like there were bricks sitting on my chest as I saw my duffle bag filled with games and my consoles resting at his feet.

“Where’s Riordan?” I didn’t like any of this. Riordan was a lot of things, but not a coward.

“I don’t know.” Whatever kindness this man had originally was officially gone. “Take it or don’t, that’s all I was asked to do. I’d get away from the gate before the cops are called.” He didn’t spare me another though and stalked to his car, driving off before I could say another word.

Fuck you, Riordan. “Fine,” I mumbled, got out of the car, and retrieved my belongings. At first, I kept my eyes focused on the ground, avoiding the cameras that pointed at my car. “Maybe not a coward, but a fucking asshole for sure.” The whirring sound of the camera rotating made me snap. I was so beyond livid at this point.

“You watching me, you asshole?” I didn’t care in that moment if neighbors or passersby saw me. “I gave you a lot of credit you didn’t deserve. What you do deserve is everything you get. Push the world away and you are alone. Maybe that’s what you want. Fine.”

Sweat was pouring down my face, and I was glad because I didn’t want him seeing the tears falling. I couldn’t believe I had been so fucking stupid. I really thought Riordan was different. I’d never read someone so wrong in my whole life.

I couldn’t give a shit anymore. Peeling out of the driveway, I hit the gas, desperate to get as far away from Riordan as possible. People had walked all over me my whole life.
